I find myself humming this song every time I visit this picturesque little town surrounded by unbelievable wild beauty.

A day trip to Lost Lake turns me into a carefree soul, happy to laze the day away beside the water while my little dog swims and fetches until he curls up, exhausted, beside me.

A day spent here also takes me back to the best memories of my teenage years, growing up in lake country in Ontario. A sunny summer day meant putting your bikini on, getting on a rickety old bike, throwing the beach towel and PB and J sandwich in the basket and pedaling down a gravel road to the lake to meet up with friends. Our beach back in the day was a grassy patch beside a dirt road but it was sublime. Days were spent swimming, sun bathing orsometimes canoeing through the thick, beautiful lily pads. No smart phone or internet required.

It was simple and easy and fun and Lost Lake takes me right back to that place.

After an afternoon of lazing in the grass and dips in the lake, it’s cocktail hour.

Scorpio Season

It’s that time of year again. Birthday time. And today I’m turning 53. Yes, 53…53!! If I’m going to be perfectly honest, it does seem a little too old to be true. Ever play the game “If I didn’t know how old I was, how old would I think I was?” I play it every year before my birthday and my answer this year is 42 usually and maybe 45 on a bad day. I definitely don’t feel the way I imagine a 53 year old should.

A co-worker stopped by my desk to chat the other day and ending up telling me that I radiate the energy of a 34 year old. He didn’t say that I look like a 34 year old (that would be pushing it) but that I had a very youthful energy. I loved it. It was a huge compliment and I told him that he was now officially my favourite. The reason it was such a lovely compliment to me is that my philosophy hasn’t been to strive for eternal youth but to celebrate my age by doing my best to look and feel pretty kick-ass for a woman in her 50’s (yup, I really want to change the perceptions of our ageist society). And when I see women either lying about or being ashamed of their age, it literally hurts my heart. If we can’t accept and be proud of the stage of life we’re at, how are we ever going to feel our worth and expect the best for ourselves?

So, one more year went by and I still haven’t botoxed, filled or lifted anything and, although never say never, cosmetic rejuvenation is not on my list of immediate future plans. I get my rejuvenation from hiking, yoga, having a good man in my life and occasionally a few too many glasses of wine with my girlfriends (or my dog).


What I really, really want to happen, however, is for people to think “wow, women in their 50’s can be pretty amazing”. I want all of us to be valued and appreciated and we sink into our skin a bit more, gain more compassion and wisdom and acquire a few more wrinkles. And I guess the way I see myself doing that is by staying fit, creative and continuing to grow as a person for a long, long time. So that, I think, is why this young man’s compliment touched my heart. It seemed uber-sincere and spoke to exactly how I want to age. Happily, gracefully, having a ton of fun and hiking and yoga-ing until the end.

So, I’m going to finish this post with a birthday wish. If I had one wish for womankind this year, it would be that we all learn to accept and love ourselves on a deep, deep level. Instead of being so concerned that we’ve gained 5 pounds, found a new wrinkle or silver hair, focus our energy on whether we’re living the life we want, doing work that inspires us and are surrounded by people who love and “get” us.  I desperately want us all to connect with our true inner beauty and love our outer beauty. And if our outer beauty isn’t what society values, then we have got to find a way to leave the beauty industry’s brainwashing behind us and learn to value ourselves and cherish ourselves and see our own beauty anyway. Women are so awesome. It’s time we fully realize that.

Baby, it’s Hot Outside! Summer Soup

Baby, it’s hot outside! Like Global Warming hot. In a desperate effort to keep cool, I’ve been hanging out in the shady green space of the community gardens near my home. And, on my way home from my siesta, I couldn’t help but notice that there were a lot of shiny, dark green cucumbers ripe for the picking all over the garden.

So when it’s this toasty out and harvest time too, what could be better than cooking up a healthy, garden fresh, chilled cucumber soup?

Chilled Cucumber Soup

  •  1 T. olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 T. lemon juice
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced cucumbers
  • 1 1/2 cups veggie broth
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley
  • sprinkle of mint
  • 1/2 cup yogurt

Heat oil on medium-high, add garlic and onion and sauté until onions are translucent. Add lemon, cucumber, broth and salt & pepper. Simmer until cucumbers are soft.

Transfer ingredients to a blender and add avocado, parsley (saving a little for garnish) and mint and blend well. Finish by stirring in yogurt. Chill and serve.

And what is the perfect accompaniment for my favourite chilled soup? A little Therapy.

Therapy is an Okanagan vineyard that’s definitely worth checking out. The “Pink Freud” rose is both fruity and full-bodied. And the names of the wine are so cute and witty…Pink Freud, Freudian Sip, Fizzio Therapy…you’ve gotta love a vineyard with delicious wine and a sense of humor too,

  In case you like my wine recommendation a little too much..Did you know that cucumbers are a natural hangover cure? They are! To avoid a hangover, eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients destroyed by too much alcohol, reducing the intensity of both a hangover and the pounding headache that comes with it.

beach yogaEvery evening I’ve been diligently practicing my yoga challenge and so far, so good. The more difficult poses haven’t begun yet and, for the moment, my yoga life is pretty easy. The daily instagram selfie part of the challenge, however, is not so easy. I’m just not a selfie lover of that magnitude and, honestly I’m finding it tales a lot of effort to post a great selfie every single day. So, what I’m going to do is document the more photogenic poses and you’ll have to trust me that I’m either doing or desperately attempting to do the rest.

Luckily, however, last night happened to be a really great night for yoga and yoga photos too. It started with an outdoor class, overlooking the ocean, taught by teacher extraordinaire, Mike Nichols (pictured above). It was hot, sweaty, challenging and awesome: everything a good yoga session should be.

After class my friend, Louise, and I walked along the beach, barefoot in the sand, to the Sailing Club for a glass of après yoga wine.

I posed for my challenge selfie #4 along the way, stretching and extending my legs as much as I possibly could. It’s not yoga perfection but yoga is supposed to be about the journey, not the destination, right? Right.
