Memories not Things

Nick is patiently waiting for Santa Paws this evening.

Luckily though my little pup isn’t really expecting any presents because a) he’s a dog and b) I stopped buying Christmas presents about 8 years ago.

When I stopped buying presents the Holiday magically went from being a grind to a beautiful time of the year that I 100% look forward to. Instead of feeling the pressure of having to buy (maybe – probably) unwanted gifts for people who already have everything they need, I can now just relax and ask people out for drinks or dinner or for an evening at my place instead. Then we can focus on what I think the true meaning of the Holiday are: celebrating the friendships and connections you have with the people you care about in your life.

Getting together instead of spending money on things is easier on your budget, way more fun and relaxing and very eco-friendly. Imagine what our landfills look like after Christmas. Full of wasted paper, tinsel, online shopping boxes and bubble wrap and cellophane. Not very healthy for our beautiful planet.

Giving up gift exchanges was the key to unlocking the magic of this beautiful season for me. I highly recommend.

Wishing everyone a magical Holiday Season full of love, food, hygge and happiness.

Post Holiday Detox Bowl

I started this holiday season full of strength and resolve and my will power lasted quite a while. Right up until someone place a warm, fresh plate of ginger snaps under my nose. Now, after a few weeks of gooey dark chocolate, bread pudding, hot chocolate with (extra) whipped cream and 1st, 2nd and 3rd helpings of holiday meals, I’m back on the path of balance and health.

If you were a little over-indulgent this Christmas season too, here is a green, detox recipe full of vitamins and anti-oxidants to get your day off to a great start:

Detox Smoothie Bowl

  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup frozen mangos
  • 2 T shredded coconunt
  • 2 T hemp seeds
  • 2 T your favourite greens powder

Blend, top with mangos and coconut garnish and get back on track with this delicious and nourishing bowl!

What Time is it?

cocktailIt’s Detox time again!

I’m happy with myself for limiting my sugary treats over the Holidays but, oops, I went a little over the top celebrating wine o’clock almost every day. Prosecco, beautiful BC whites, bourbon on the rocks and, of course, a delicious craft cocktail or two…

I discovered one of my fave holiday cocktails having Christmas dinner at Vancouver’s beautiful new restaurant, Boulevard. This drink is visually stunning. A gorgeous cherry red, garnished with a sprig of fresh thyme and named The Professor Suzuki, after one of my Canadian heroes. It’s an earthy, organic BC version of a Cosmopolitan. How could I resist?

Check out the recipe here: The Professor Suzuki

But now, the party is over. I’m back at work, back at school and looking to get my healthy glow back too.

My game plan for accomplishing this goal:

1) Lots of big, fresh, organic salads for dinner.

2) Taking fish oil every day. Good for our brain, our skin and our overall well being.

3) Getting my workout vibe back with a few yoga classes, and after work runs.

and, last but not least:

4) Drinking a big, delicious, detoxifying smoothie every morning.

The recipe I’m sharing with you is my current fave. It’s fresh and sweet and tastes like summer. A nice (and healthy) way to start a cold, rainy January day. I hope you enjoy and santé!

New Years Detox

There’s so much to love about the holidays. Big, delicious family dinners, with second and third helpings. Bottles of bubbly. Nights on the town, dressed to the nines, enjoying way too many cocktails. Fragrant, home-baked, gingerbread cookies, fresh out of the oven and irresistible. Boxes of dark chocolates beckoning to you as you innocently walk by.

But what happens when the new year rolls around and you’ve got a depleted bank account, a bulging muffin top?

It’s detox time.

Drink the recipe below every morning to kick-start your healthy eating plan and I guarantee in a week or two you’ll have your energy and your waistline back, ready to make 2014, the year of the horse, the healthiest, happiest, most vibrant year ever. xo
